LONGJI RICE TERRACE

Longji rice terraces were first built 650 years back during the Yuan and Qing dynasty and the Zhuang people are still inhabiting the villages adjoining the terraces continuing the rice cultivation. The altitude of the rice terraces vary from 300 meters up to 1,100 meters above the sea level and views of the wavy patterns going down in steps are best enjoyed form the top.

The rice terraces have four distinct appearances during four different times of the year. In the month of March and April, when the seeds are planted, the terraces appear to be brown with layer of water on the top. By the month of July, when the crop has started growing, the terraces are lustrous green. It appears as if a vast green carpet has been spread over the mountains. During the fall, when the crop is ready to be harvested, the rice terraces turn golden yellow, and in winter, the rice terraces are covered with snow given a sparking white appearance.
